Literacy is not just numeral, linguistic or educational; it is financial, civic and social, among many other things.

To be literate is to be aware.
To be literate is the only way to live life well! Life, as we know, extends beyond just survival through means of subsistence. To live life well, is to live and thrive in society, and that entails abiding by laws and rules which are built on universal principles of ensuring justice, peace and order.
